SANAS actively participates in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Africa in the area of accreditation with the aim to provide leadership on accreditation matters in the African region and deepening regional integration. The Strategy and Development Stream drives SANAS’s regional obligations in its capacity as the SADC Cooperation in Accreditation (SADCA) Secretariat and Regional Coordinator. The Stream also provides the Secretariat function for the newly establish African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC).
SADCA is one of the regional Standardisation, Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Metrology (SQAM) structures created in terms of the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Annexure to SADC Trade Protocol. SANAS remains committed to providing both the regional coordinator and secretarial support for the foreseeable future.
AFRAC is one of the four pillars of the Pan-African quality infrastructure established by the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) Planning and Coordinating Agency (PCA) to support intra-African trade, improve the competitiveness of African goods and services and to facilitate health and safety of the public and the environment.
Over the next five years AFRAC and SADCA will work towards the goal of sustaining an internationally acceptable Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) on the continent.
